Today I wanted to share with you the reasons why I consider Mdina to be the second best photoshoot, elopement and wedding location in Malta (after Valletta). Mdina, the silent city in Malta, boasts a rich history dating back over 4,000 years. It was once the island's capital and holds a significant place in Maltese heritage. The city's architecture reflects various influences, from medieval to Baroque styles. Visitors can explore historic sites like the Palazzo Falson Historic House Museum and walk in this medieval city.

Unique Charm

Let me first explain why Mdina is so unique. Mdina is all about its narrow streets and labyrinthine alleys that transport visitors to a bygone era. The city's medieval walls offer breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. Wandering through Mdina's streets, one can't help but be captivated by the timeless beauty of the architecture and the peaceful atmosphere that envelops the city.

Iconic Locations for Unforgettable Photos in Mdina

In the below list I have tried to incorporate the best locations for photo creation at Mdina. The reality is that Mdina (unlike Valletta) is relatively small and therefore these locations are very close to each other. Having said that all these areas / squares or streets have are particularly interesting from a composition and light opportunities point of view.

Let me therefore share with you all the locations I really love and hopefully these can be of inspiration to you.

The secondary entrance and Tunnel

As you will note in this write up, I just don’t even mention the main gate entrance. This is due to the fact that this entrance is always crowded and presents little artist possibilities. So I always like to start from the secondary gate.

This secondary gate leads to a small square (Triq inguanez) which leads to a street where there used to be stores in the past (Triq l-Mhazen). Here you can also find a tunnel entrance which I love to use for silhouettes. There is also close by an old house (with white doors) which I love to use!

The Mesquita square

If instead of going to triq l-Imhazen (the area were there are the stores) you go up triq San Nikola and into triq Mesquita you end up in Mesquita square. In this square there is a lovely maltese restaurant (Don Mesquita). This square is famous as a scene from the series Game of thrones was also filmed here.

The main square infront of the Cathedral (Pjazza St. Paul)

A location which certainly should be visited is the square infront of the cathedral. Although most of the time the square is full of people and the light conditions are not ideal, I find that viewing the location is a must but secondly having a challenge is also good for me. You can see in the below photos how I typically visualise the location.

As a side note, a visit to Mdina Cathedral is a must for anyone exploring this ancient city. The cathedral's grand facade and intricate architectural details make it an iconic location for photoshoots. The interior boasts ornate decorations and stunning artwork, offering a rich visual experience for photographers and visitors alike. Stepping inside the cathedral, visitors are greeted by a sense of tranquility and awe-inspiring beauty.

Piazza del Bastione and the Famous Blue Door!

Another interesting location, is the area next to Piazza del Bastone. Apart from the breathtaking view which is not to be missed, the piazza has at least 2 nice villas which I like to include in my photos. Also close by there is the famous blue door with arching flowers which has become an instagramable location!

There is also closeby (apart from the most famous cafeteria Fontanella) another less known cafeteria and coffee shop named Coogi’s which also has amazing views when you go the backyard!

Il-FOSS

Mdina, the old city, was built to have a space of defence. This ditch is today a beautiful garden space which can also be used for photos. I am not particularly in love with this area (as it is completely open) but can definitely be interesting particularly in cloudy days or towards sunset.

The village close by Rabat

Another reason why I love Mdina is that it is so close by to another village that I love shooting in which is Rabat. This village presents a lot of local elements, narrow streets and colourful alleys and I consider it a gem. The fact that it is just outside of Mdina and can be easily reached by walking is such an advantage.
