When I first started as a wedding photographer, I basically had no idea! My photography skills were not where they should have been and my business skills, well that’s another story. Essential Camera Gear for Different Types of Photography

Having the right gear is essential to capture stunning shots. Depending on the type of photography you're interested in, there are specific tools that can enhance your skills and improve your results. Some photographers love zoom lenses, but my approach is to just go with prime lenses. Here I will explain my philosophy, how I carry my cameras and why I use this approach.

Shooting in RAW Format for Maximum Editing Flexibility

In order to have maximum flexibility during post-processing, it's crucial to shoot in RAW format rather than JPEG. RAW files contain all the data captured by your camera's sensor, providing more room for adjustments in terms of exposure, white balance, and color grading. Unlike JPEG files which are compressed and processed by the camera's software, RAW files preserve every detail captured by your camera.

Recommended Camera Settings

To achieve optimal results in different shooting scenarios, it's important to know your camera and adjust your camera settings accordingly. While there is no one-size-fits-all approach, here are some recommended camera settings to consider:

• Aperture: Choose a wider aperture (lower f-number) like f/2.8 or lower to create a shallow depth of field and isolate the subject from the background.

• ISO: Adjust the ISO based on lighting conditions but aim for lower values to minimize noise.

• Shutter speed: Ensure a fast enough shutter speed to avoid motion blur.

• Focus mode: Ensure an effective focus mode, depending on your camera.

• Exposure meter mode: My exposure metering mode is always, expose for highlights.

• Button configuration and shortcuts.

Using natural light and flash

One technique for utilizing natural light effectively is to pay attention to the direction and quality of the light. The angle at which the light hits your subject can create depth and add dimension to your photographs. For example, shooting during golden hour (the hour after sunrise or before sunset) can produce warm, soft lighting that enhances the mood of your images.

Another aspect to consider when working with natural light is its intensity. Depending on the time of day and weather conditions, sunlight can be harsh and create unflattering shadows on your subjects. To overcome this challenge, you can use diffusers or reflectors to soften or redirect the light. Diffusers help spread out the light evenly, while reflectors bounce it back onto your subject from a different angle. However, I have to tell you that I don’t use any during a wedding day!

Off-Camera Flash

While natural light is beautiful, there are times when you need more control over your lighting conditions. This is where off-camera flash comes into play. By using external flashes or strobes, you can create a more controlled and consistent lighting setup.

Off-camera flash allows you to experiment with different lighting techniques and achieve professional-looking results. By placing the flash off to the side or above your subject, you can avoid harsh shadows and create a more flattering look.

When using off-camera flash, it's crucial to understand how to balance it with ambient light. By adjusting the power output of your flash and modifying its direction, you can seamlessly blend artificial light with natural light for a more balanced exposure.

Invisible posing and prompts

Invisible posing and prompts are essential techniques for photographers to master when capturing genuine and natural moments. By discovering subtle posing techniques that make subjects feel comfortable, photographers can create images that truly reflect their personalities.

Using prompts or actions instead of traditional poses is a great way to elicit genuine emotions from your subjects.
