Do you wanted to improve your photography skills?

Have you ever asked yourself how you could create visually compelling images?

Do you want to know how you can become a successful wedding photographer?

When I first started as a wedding photographer, I basically had no idea! My photography skills were not where they should have been and my business skills, well that’s another story. I started to learn everything I could about photography - read books, watch videos and get inspiration from the great masters of photography. Then I took various online courses from some of the best wedding photographers in the world, attended conferences and created my own photography style. When I started, there was no one to assist me or guide me in this journey.

Last year I had the pleasure of being invited to Germany to conduct a workshop to photography students in the institute of FHBK and share my experience with them. This experience was an eye opener and made me realise how much helping other aspiring wedding photographers brings me joy. I now would like to share this passion with you.

Photography Training in Malta: Master Wedding Photography

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced photographer, my experience and one to one guidance will be made to suit your needs. I will explain to you my approach, philosophy, tools and give you the path you need to follow for success.

Below are the topics in more details we can discuss:

Photography composition basics

Different Perspectives and Angles

Exploring different perspectives and angles is another way to enhance your photography compositions. Instead of always shooting from eye level, try getting down low or finding an elevated vantage point. Changing your perspective can provide a fresh take on familiar subjects and add visual interest to your images.

For instance, when photographing children or pets, crouching down to their eye level can result in more intimate and captivating portraits. On the other hand, capturing architecture from a high angle can emphasize patterns and shapes that may go unnoticed from ground level.

Leading Lines, Symmetry, and Framing Techniques

Utilizing leading lines, symmetry, and framing techniques are additional tools in your composition arsenal.

  • Leading lines are elements within a photograph that guide the viewer's gaze towards the main subject or focal point. These lines can be literal (such as roads or pathways) or implied (like tree branches or converging lines).

  • Symmetry creates balance by mirroring elements on either side of an imaginary line within the frame. It can evoke a sense of harmony and order in your photographs.

  • Framing involves using objects within the scene to enclose or highlight your subject. This technique adds depth and draws attention to the main focal point.

By incorporating these composition techniques into your photography, you can create stronger and more visually appealing images. Experiment with different combinations of leading lines, symmetry, framing, and other elements to find what works best for your style and subject matter.

How to be more creative (the self)

Creativity is the secret ingredient that can take your photography skills to the next level. To become a more creative photographer, you need to step out of your comfort zone, find inspiration in unexpected places, and infuse emotions and storytelling into your images.

Embracing Experimentation and Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone

One way to enhance your creativity as a photographer is by embracing experimentation and stepping out of your comfort zone. Don't be afraid to try new techniques, angles, or compositions. Push yourself to explore different lighting conditions, perspectives, and subjects. By taking risks and trying new things, you'll discover unique ways to capture moments and express yourself through your photographs.

Finding Inspiration from Other Photographers, Art Forms, or Everyday Life

Inspiration can come from anywhere! Look for inspiration from other photographers whose work you admire. Study their composition techniques, use of color or contrast, or how they tell stories through their images. Draw inspiration from other art forms like painting or cinema. Explore how they use light, shapes, lines, and textures to create visually captivating pieces.

But don't limit yourself to just photography or art. Find inspiration in everyday life too! Pay attention to the beauty around you - whether it's the play of light on a city street or the vibrant colors of nature in bloom. Train your eye to see potential photographic opportunities everywhere you go.

Developing a Personal Style by Infusing Emotions and Storytelling into Your Images

Developing a personal style sets you apart as a photographer. It's about infusing emotions and storytelling into your images so that they evoke an emotional response from viewers.

To develop this style:

  • Focus on capturing genuine emotions: Encourage natural expressions from your subjects and aim to capture candid moments that reveal their true personalities.

  • Pay attention to composition: Use leading lines, framing, or the rule of thirds to guide the viewer's eye and create visual interest.

  • Experiment with different editing techniques: Editing can enhance the mood and atmosphere of your images. Play around with color grading, contrast adjustments, or adding filters to achieve the desired effect.

Remember, developing a personal style takes time and practice. Don't be discouraged if it doesn't happen overnight. Keep experimenting, learning from others, and refining your skills. Being more creative as a photographer is about pushing boundaries, seeking inspiration in unexpected places, and infusing your own emotions and storytelling into your images. Embrace experimentation, find inspiration from various sources, and develop a personal style that reflects who you are as an artist. With time and dedication, you'll see your creativity soar!

My photography tools and settings (the technical)

Essential Camera Gear for Different Types of Photography

Having the right gear is essential to capture stunning shots. Depending on the type of photography you're interested in, there are specific tools that can enhance your skills and improve your results. Some photographers love zoom lenses, but my approach is to just go with prime lenses. Here I will explain my philosophy, how I carry my cameras and why I use this approach.

Shooting in RAW Format for Maximum Editing Flexibility

In order to have maximum flexibility during post-processing, it's crucial to shoot in RAW format rather than JPEG. RAW files contain all the data captured by your camera's sensor, providing more room for adjustments in terms of exposure, white balance, and color grading. Unlike JPEG files which are compressed and processed by the camera's software, RAW files preserve every detail captured by your camera.

Recommended Camera Settings

To achieve optimal results in different shooting scenarios, it's important to know your camera and adjust your camera settings accordingly. While there is no one-size-fits-all approach, here are some recommended camera settings to consider:

  • Aperture: Choose a wider aperture (lower f-number) like f/2.8 or lower to create a shallow depth of field and isolate the subject from the background.

  • ISO: Adjust the ISO based on lighting conditions but aim for lower values to minimize noise.

  • Shutter speed: Ensure a fast enough shutter speed to avoid motion blur.

  • Focus mode: Ensure an effective focus mode, depending on your camera.

  • Exposure meter mode: My exposure metering mode is always, expose for highlights.

  • Button configuration and shortcuts.

Documentary vs Posed approach (the art)

Understanding the differences between candid documentary-style photography and posed shots can greatly enhance your skills as a photographer. Each approach has its own unique qualities, and knowing when to use each one is crucial in capturing the essence of different situations or events and wedding present both type of approaches.

Understanding the Differences

In the world of photography, there are two main styles: documentary and posed. The documentary approach focuses on capturing candid moments as they naturally unfold, without any intervention or direction from the photographer. This style aims to tell a story through images by documenting genuine emotions, interactions, and details of a particular event or subject.

On the other hand, posed shots involve more direction and control from the photographer. In this approach, you actively guide your subjects into specific poses or positions to create visually appealing compositions. This style is often used in portrait photography or when you want to achieve a certain aesthetic or concept.

Knowing When to Use Each Approach

Both documentary and posed approaches have their time and place. Understanding when to use each one will allow you to capture authentic moments while still achieving desired outcomes.

For example, in a wedding ceremony where emotions run high, using a documentary approach can help you capture raw and genuine expressions of joy, love, and excitement among the couple and their guests. By blending into the background and being unobtrusive, you can document real interactions without interrupting the flow of events.

On the other hand, during formal group portraits at a wedding reception or any other event where people are posing for photographs, using a more directed approach is ideal. You can guide individuals into flattering poses that highlight their best features while ensuring everyone is captured beautifully within the frame.

Balancing Spontaneity with Direction

Balancing spontaneity with direction is key in both approaches. In documentary-style photography, it's essential to be ready for unexpected moments while maintaining an observant eye for interesting compositions. You want to capture those candid moments that tell a story.

With posed shots, you have more control over the scene. However, it's still important to create a relaxed and natural atmosphere for your subjects. Providing gentle direction and guidance can help them feel at ease while allowing their personalities to shine through.

Using natural light and flash

Utilizing Natural Light

Lighting is everything. Mastering the art of utilizing natural light can take your photographs to the next level. By understanding how light behaves in different environments, you can capture stunning images that evoke emotion and tell a story.

One technique for utilizing natural light effectively is to pay attention to the direction and quality of the light. The angle at which the light hits your subject can create depth and add dimension to your photographs. For example, shooting during golden hour (the hour after sunrise or before sunset) can produce warm, soft lighting that enhances the mood of your images.

Another aspect to consider when working with natural light is its intensity. Depending on the time of day and weather conditions, sunlight can be harsh and create unflattering shadows on your subjects. To overcome this challenge, you can use diffusers or reflectors to soften or redirect the light. Diffusers help spread out the light evenly, while reflectors bounce it back onto your subject from a different angle. However, I have to tell you that I don’t use any during a wedding day!

Off-Camera Flash

While natural light is beautiful, there are times when you need more control over your lighting conditions. This is where off-camera flash comes into play. By using external flashes or strobes, you can create a more controlled and consistent lighting setup.

Off-camera flash allows you to experiment with different lighting techniques and achieve professional-looking results. It enables you to illuminate your subject from various angles, creating depth and dimension in your photographs. By placing the flash off to the side or above your subject, you can avoid harsh shadows and create a more flattering look.

When using off-camera flash, it's crucial to understand how to balance it with ambient light. By adjusting the power output of your flash and modifying its direction, you can seamlessly blend artificial light with natural light for a more balanced exposure.

Invisible posing and prompts

Invisible posing and prompts are essential techniques for photographers to master when capturing genuine and natural moments. By discovering subtle posing techniques that make subjects feel comfortable, photographers can create images that truly reflect their personalities.

Using prompts or actions instead of traditional poses is a great way to elicit genuine emotions from your subjects. Rather than instructing them to pose in a specific way, you can ask them to interact with their surroundings or perform certain actions. This approach helps to create a relaxed environment during shoots, allowing your subjects to be themselves and express their true emotions.

One of the benefits of using prompts is that it helps to capture candid moments. When people are engaged in an activity or responding to a prompt, they tend to forget about the camera and become more natural in front of it. This leads to authentic expressions and emotions that make for compelling photographs.

Another advantage of invisible posing and prompts is that they go beyond the typical static poses often seen in portraits. Instead of having your subject stand still and smile at the camera, you can encourage them to move around, interact with objects, or engage in playful activities. This adds dynamism and energy to your images, making them more visually interesting.

To effectively use invisible posing and prompts during a photoshoot, it's important to establish a rapport with your subjects beforehand. Take the time to get to know them, understand their personalities, and build trust. This will help create a comfortable atmosphere where they feel confident enough to let their guard down and be themselves.

During the shoot itself, give clear instructions for prompts while allowing room for spontaneity. For example, if you're photographing a couple, you could ask them to whisper something funny into each other's ears or playfully chase each other around. These prompts will evoke genuine reactions and emotions that result in memorable photographs.

It's also essential to pay attention not only to the technical aspects of photography but also to the emotional connection between you and your subjects. Being aware of their body language, facial expressions, and subtle cues can help you guide them towards natural poses and capture their true essence.

Techniques to improve your compositions

Creating Visual Balance

One of the key aspects of photography is creating visually appealing compositions. To achieve this, you can explore different techniques that help create a sense of balance in your images. One way to do this is by utilizing symmetry or asymmetry in your composition.

  • Symmetry: This technique involves placing elements in your frame in a way that they are mirrored or evenly distributed on both sides. It creates a sense of harmony and stability, making the image pleasing to the eye.

  • Asymmetry: On the other hand, asymmetrical compositions involve intentionally placing elements off-center or at different distances from each other. This adds visual interest and tension to the image, making it more dynamic.

By experimenting with these techniques, you can enhance your composition skills and create captivating photographs.

Adding Depth and Dimension through Framing

Another technique that can significantly improve your compositions is framing. By using various framing techniques, you can add depth and dimension to your images, making them more engaging for viewers.

  • Foreground Elements: Incorporating foreground elements into your composition helps create a sense of depth by providing a point of reference for the viewer's eye. It allows them to perceive the different layers within the image, giving it a three-dimensional feel.

  • Leading Lines: Utilizing leading lines within your frame guides the viewer's gaze towards the main subject or focal point of your photograph. These lines can be natural elements like roads or rivers or even man-made objects such as fences or buildings.

Experimenting with different framing techniques will enable you to capture images that have a greater impact on viewers.

Creating Depth with Foreground Elements

To make your photographs visually compelling, it's crucial to incorporate foreground elements into your compositions. These elements not only add depth but also provide context and scale to your images.

  • Natural Objects: You can include natural objects such as rocks, flowers, or branches in the foreground to create a sense of proximity and depth. These elements help draw the viewer's attention into the image and make them feel immersed in the scene.

  • Man-Made Objects: Incorporating man-made objects like fences, street signs, or architectural features can also add interest and depth to your compositions. They provide a visual anchor that helps establish a connection between the viewer and the subject.

By consciously including foreground elements in your photographs, you can elevate their visual impact and create more compelling compositions.
