Castello Zamittello was built by a wealthy Baron Bernardo Zamitt, and is a unique castle that lies on the outskirts of a country village of Mgarr, on the way to Gnejna Bay. Built in Norman style, it used to guard against sudden raids by corsairs, as indicated by the four unusual guard turrets adorning its façade. The castle is now set in lush gardens and surrounded by calming country scenes.
General information
The Zamittello Palace, also known as Castello Zamittello or Zamittello Tower, is a 19th-century Victorian countryside folly on the outskirts of Mgarr, Malta, on the road leading to Gnejna. It was built by Sir Giuseppe Nicola Zamitt and has remained in the same family for the past 200 years.
It prominently features one roof-level turret and although the building is referred to as a palace, it is infact more a villa. Above the turret sits a Christian cross, in the form of a crucifix. The Turret is easily accessible, and provides a magnificent view over the whole residence.
The venue is beautiful as a wedding location - in a very quiet and relaxing area with wide open space. Although the venue has flood lights installed, in general the venue is very poorly lit and one would need to take care to ensure that there is additional lighting installed as after sunset the gardens can become really dark.
