The Mediterranean Conference Centre (MCC) is a 16th century building which is located towards the tip of Valletta peninsula and has magnificent views across the Grand Harbour. The MCC was built as a hospital in the 16th century by the Order of St. John and is now a conference centre.

General information

The Mediterranean Conference Centre (MCCDar il-Mediterran għall-Konferenzi) is a conference centre in Valletta which was originally built as a hospital by the Order of St. John and was known as the Sacra Infermeria or the Holy Infirmary.  It was known as the Grand Hôspital during the French occupation of Malta and during the British period was named as the Station Hospital. The building is now used for multiple banquets, exhibitions, international conventions and theatrical shows.

The Sacra Infermeria originally had two wards with a central courtyard, but was subsequently enlarged to have six large wards. The main hall was once the largest hall in Europe with a length of 145metres. It also has a monumental staircase designed in form of flight of stairs going down against a wall and then turn midway opposite the other side of the wall. The corridors and underground halls have vaulted ceilings in the form of a cross. In August 2020, the Mediterranean Conference Centre also opened the Grand Harbour terrace for use so that it is now possible to enjoy the amazing view of Valletta’s Grand Harbour.

The Mediterranean Conference Centre therefore has the following locations which can be used:

Grand Harbour Roof Terrace

The Grand Harbour Terrace commanding magnificent views of the Grand Harbour can accommodate a maximum of 600 persons.

The Sacra Infermeria Hall

The Sacra Infermeria Hall within the Mediterranean Conference Centre is an extraordinary and magnificent space. It covers a total of 1,700 square meters and is 155 meters long. This dramatic space is also very versatile as mutiple halls can be combined.

It can be used as a banqueting hall accommodating 1,400 guests seated to dinner or 2,500 for a stand-up cocktail style reception. This hall was once the Long Ward of the Sacra Infermeria. It is one of the longest halls in Europe and was recognized as an architectural feat in the 16th century when it was constructed.

The La Valette Hall

The La Valette Hall is the main Banqueting Hall at the Centre. Formerly the Sacra Infermeria’s Great Magazine Ward, it is an architectural gem with its combination of splendid vaulted ceilings over such a sheer length. Covering 1,500 square meters it seats 900 guests. Alternatively, the hall can accommodate up to 1,500 guests for a stand-up occasion. Dining in the La Valette Hall can be made even more of an experience when the food and the atmosphere are combined to create a night dedicated to theme which goes so well with the location - such as a Medieval Banquet.

From a photographic point of view the La Vallette Hall is wonderful to shoot in and is an amazing vintage atmosphere. It is however not easy to shoot in this location due to the low light at flash will normally have to be used. On the other hand, the outdoor location is is wonderful during sunset time however again additional light may be needed for when night times.
