Today I wanted to share with you my thoughts on why I love Valletta for any kind of photoshoot being it a wedding shootout, a destination elopement or a family photoshoot.
From its charming streets to historic architecture, this city is a photographer's paradise. As I delved into the world of photography, I discovered that Valletta provides an enchanting setting for capturing memorable moments. Whether it's the grandeur of arches near the National Library or the picturesque Upper Barrakka Gardens with panoramic views of the Grand Harbour or the remote area of the Bridge Bar, every corner holds potential for breathtaking shots.
Exploring this gem revealed endless possibilities for unique and captivating photographs. The vibrant colors of traditional Maltese balconies and the intricate details of Baroque facades add an extraordinary touch to any photo session.

Capturing the Essence of Valletta's History
Valletta, the capital of Malta, is a city steeped in history. Its cobblestone streets and ancient walls whisper tales of knights and emperors. As a photographer, I have had the privilege to delve into this rich tapestry of time through my lens.
The city's history unfolds like a captivating storybook as you wander through its narrow alleys and grand squares. The Baroque architecture adorned with ornate balconies stands as a testament to its glorious past. Every corner reveals another layer of history waiting to be immortalized in photographs - it’s like stepping back in time while also being firmly rooted in the present.
The play of light and shadow against these structures creates an ever-changing canvas for photography enthusiasts like myself. Each photo encapsulates more than mere bricks and mortar; it encapsulates resilience, creativity, and endurance throughout eras.
Let’s delve in the various locations and streets were I actually love to shoot in Valletta.
Iconic Locations for Unforgettable Photos
In the below list I have tried to incorporate the best locations for photo creation. I love these locations because they are particularly interesting from a composition and light opportunities point of view. I don’t mention the quite obvious Upper Barakka Garden because these are usually full with people and very limited on the possibilities of light - so in general this is not one of my favourite locations.
Let me therefore share with you all the locations I really love and hopefully these can be of inspiration to you.
The Bridge Bar Area and the Victoria Gate
This location is cool because it has a bridge structure under which cars can pass. The area is really interesting because in this close area of 100meters there is the Victoria Gate, colourful garage doors, stairs and a bridge (apart from the view). For this reason I love the variety of options this area offers and the way the light drops in the area (even during the day and different seasons).
The Triton Fountain and Entrance to Valletta
Maybe this may look as a cliche however the Triton fountain and the upgraded entrance to Valletta has so much to offer. Although the Triton fountain can be a bit tricky to shoot if shooting in midday (as you need to look out for the angle of light), you can really position your subjects depending if you are looking for a silhouette or for a more normal exposure.
After the restoration of this area, this zone serves really as a lovely entrance to our capital city.
The Valletta Ditch area
I recently discovered this area by coincidence in a photoshoot. This may area may be a bit out of the way to arrive to, but I think it is worth considering. The area is much more quiet (as it is not that easily accessible) and being in the ditch there may be different type of light in different areas. I have not had extensive time to discover this area, and I am sure that I will be going back to it in the future.
The Stairs and Parliament Area
The entrance to Valletta and also the stairs near the parliament have amazing geometry and I love to shoot near (either from the opposite direction or from the side - as you can see the examples below). The light tends to fall well in the area and you can also play with people passing by if you wish. This is a classic location which you should definitely consider and include in your photoshoot.
Republic Street and Old Theatre area
I mainly shoot in these areas when I want to show the effect of people passing by (as these are usually full with people) or I want to use the stairs near the old theatre. I also like the shape of the tiles on this part of the street.
Valletta Design Cluster and Tunnel
This is another interesting area which may not be very known. Recently the Valletta Design Cluster has been opened and it does have an easily accessible garden on its roof which you may want to visit. The garden is small but can provide some interesting different shooting mode. There is also a tunnel close by which can be interesting for composition purposes. This tunnel takes you to the breakwater and when I have time I like to walk there with my couples as they love that different vibe.
Misrah Indipendenza
This is also an interesting area which I want to share with you. The main elements of interest here are the small stairs near the S.t John Ambulance offices, the coloured blue doors, the columns near the St. Paul’s Cathedral and the private entrance to a group of houses which is usually accessible (this is near the Statue of Our Lady of Victories) which I love to use.
Siege Bell Memorial, Lower Barakka Gardens, Boat Houses
These three areas which I describe here are probably more popular with tourists and therefore much more known. The lower barakka garden (similar to the upper barakka gardens) is not really my favourite location, but it can provide some unique imagery - particularly with the view to the Bell War Memorial. There is also the boathouse areas which are interesting and worth exploring. The problem with these locations is that these are very open and therefore is it difficult to control the light.
Area near the BreakWater
If you don’t mind the walk (and the walk actually allows for great photo opportunities) then the area near the breakwater is definitely interesting. The area is also a bit open, so I would suggest to visit near sunset time. The area is particularly interesting to visit when there has been recent rain, as puddles of water tend to occur and these can create interesting reflection opportunities.
Area near the national Library
Another area I really love in Valletta is the area opposite Casino Maltese. This area is full of arches which not only are beautiful with their architecture but also provide a directional light of entry. As a photographer I could not ask for more and you should definitely explore this area.
Strait Street and the various alleys
Valletta is full of secret alleys and streets. My usual way to shoot in Valletta (which combines with my style) is usually just to walk and see what inspires me. All the different streets of Valletta, shops, people, architecture and history make for an amazing mixture of creations for unique images.

Obtaining Permits for Photoshoots in Valletta
HERITAGE MALTA LOCATIONS
If you wish to take your photoshoot on step higher, then you could also secure a permit for photoshoots in Heritage Malta sites in Valletta. These include:
MUŻA – The Malta National Community Art Museum: This modern art museum showcases the work of Maltese and international artists. It is housed in the former Royal Opera House, a landmark building that was destroyed in World War II and rebuilt in the 1960s.
National War Museum - Fort St Elmo: This fort was a key strategic point during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. The museum tells the story of the siege and subsequent battles involving the Maltese islands. Fort St. Elmo is really a large area and can provide a significant.
National Museum of Archaeology. The National Museum of Archaeology is a museum in Valletta, Malta, that houses a collection of artefacts from the prehistory and early history of the Maltese Islands. It is located in the Auberge de Provence, a 16th-century building that was once the headquarters of the langue of Provence of the Order of St. John. This location has a Gran Salon which can be used for wedding and for photoshoots.

This hotel is my favourite hotel in Valletta and also probably in Malta.
